ABOUT LACLAIRE’S

DAMASCUS STEEL

HANDLE MATERIAL

We are a family-owned, small business. Our beautiful knives are made in the USA and created by the father and son team of Perry and Ryan LaClaire. We started our cutlery shop selling a German Cutlery line of kitchen knives. As we continued our sales and growth over the years, we noticed a demand for folding and hunting knives. Not wanting to compete with the big box stores, we started researching. We found some fantastic blade smiths, started a partnership with them, and began using their knife designs as blanks, adding handle material from various sources.

Original Damascus steel was imported from India to Damascus, where bladesmiths forged them into swords; the technique was lost in the 1750’s. In 1973 Bill Moran a master bladesmith unveiled his “Damascus Steel” at a Knifemakers Guild Show.  Several types of steel and iron slices are welded together to form a billet, which is drawn out and folded until the desired number of layers are formed. This new “Damascus” Billet is then forged into a knife blank or a blade blank. LaClaire’s Cutlery Shoppe provides custom knives made in the USA using  Damascus steel. Kitchen Knives and Hunting Knives.

Customize the handle of your Damascus Knives with wood, bone, horn, or synthetic materials.  We have managed over time to build up some good resources for many of our handle materials. So we are able to offer more choices and still keep the prices reasonable. One of our handle materials is called “Fluerinite” it is a type of resin that we make.  When it gets wet it  become more grippy, which is nice because then it  has less of a change of slipping out of your hand. We have developed many different color combinations.
